THE GIANTS CAUSEWAY, COUNTY ANTRIM, IRELAND

I.The Redress of Poise, previously unpublished, contains a series of essays (written between 1990 and 1996) pushing for the same project. It represent developments in foundational thinking in various areas of inquiry: economics, historical studies, ecology, concerns of justice, systematics, Christology.

II.Process: Introducing Themselves to Young (Christian) Minders, is produced here from a printed copy used in teaching a course on Philosophy of Religion in Mt. St. Vincent University, Halifax. It was a book promised in 1974 at the conclusion of the work noted at VI below, to be completed in the late 1980s, which it was. The lectures were televised in a twenty-hour series: the master tapes are available and ordinary copies of the tapes can be made available.

III.Lonergan’s Challenge to the University and the Economy was published in 1980. It is of the same character as the The Redress of Poise, but deals also with a different set of inquiries: mathematics, biology, literary studies. It also gives a broad perspective on the problems of economic studies. The copy presented here has the added interest of being photocopied from Lonergan’s own copy (which is in the Lonergan Archives in Toronto) and having his marginal jottings.

IV.The Shaping of the Foundations was published in 1976. It contains four essays, two of which were presented at the Florida International Lonergan Conference, essays on botany and musicology. The other two essays deal with problems of method in zoology and in foundational analysis. The chapter on musicology, written in 1969, is McShane’s first effort at bringing out the relevance of the key division of labour in an area of inquiry.

V. Wealth of Self and Wealth of Nations: Self-Axis of the Great Ascent, is an introduction to self from Lonergan’s perspective used by McShane in Mt. St. Vincent University from 1974 to 1994.

Of the six above books, then, two (II and V) are introductory. They are complemented by two other introductory texts published by Axial Press, Halifax:
A Brief History of Tongue. From Big Bang to Coloured Wholes(1999) and Economics for Everyone. Das Jus Kapital(1998).
The three advanced books listed above are complemented by McShane, Pastkeynes Pastmodern Economics. A Fresh Pragmatism and B.Anderson and P.McShane, Beyond Establishment Economics. No Thank You, Mankiw. Both these books emerged from Axial Press in 2002.
